Matilda is a gifted young girl with telekinetic powers who uses her abilities to overcome a neglectful family and a tyrannical school headmistress. With the help of a kind teacher, she finds freedom and happiness.

Challenge
Create two concepts that introduce the film's mood without giving up too many hints to the viewer.
Approach
The first concept is based on some of the objects featured in the movie, that are meaningful for the plot. The names of the cast are written through these items, and the motion follows the article's personality. For instance, the glue can shape Danny Devito's name, appearing and shaping itself as a sticky substance.
The second design concept focuses on the characters, pairing their portrait with simple background patterns inspired by the iconic wallpapers of the ‘90s and clothing patterns that have a big impact on the film visuals. Relating to the school setting, the cast is drawn with a colour pencil look on a textured paper and the selected typeface will reinforce the naive and imaginative theme of Matilda. The pattern and cast is “drawn live”, while the capital letters appear as if they are enchanted items dancing until they get into position . This gives a hint of Matilda’s magical powers, much like the deck of cards flying around in one of the scenes. The secondary typeface (script) appears handwritten quickly, once everything else is in place.
