Overview
Every matchbox is ultimately a reminder of a specific place and it can bring memories attached to that: bits of the culture and the context where it belonged along with its fire and light.
Challenge
Fire and memory are tricky businesses to animate. The visuals had to be able to express the difference between reality and the recollection while emphasising a dreamy experience.
Approach
To achieve smooth movement of the flame and a sudden ignition effect when the reminiscence comes alive, cel was used throughout the animation.
As the matchbox was intended to evoke a whimsical memory for the viewer through first-hand experience, a noticeable contrast was required between the look and feel of the reality scenes and the memory scenes. This was achieved by combining line work with grainy, textured colour patches, which were inspired by the grainy finish and minimalist compositions gathered during the research into matchboxes.
